Project Brief
After a competitive tender process, NSW Health contracted Donnelley Constructions to build a single story, 20 bed non-acute Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit. The scope of works included courtyards and landscaping, all set within the confines of the Sutherland Shire Hospital.
The building was constructed out of a conventional concrete framed structure, utilising a first floor slab, which would allow for future development. Perimeter walls were constructed from pattern pre-cast walls specially imported for this project. The walls and ceiling featured impact resistant materials necessary for such a facility.
From previous experience and recognising the unique processes required in successfully completing health projects, the team at Donnelley’s worked closely with hospital staff on a project plan which aimed at addressing the complexity of services and equipment required in the facilities day to day operations. Transparent communications and forward planning were the key elements to the projects success, especially as day-to-day operations needed to continue during the construction process.
Protection and safety for patients, hospital staff and contractors meant that a sophisticated security system needed to be in place and managed diligently. The existing mental health ward continued to function during the construction process and no major incidents occurred during the project.
As special requirements such as high quality fittings needed to be implemented to both administration areas and patients’ rooms, hospital administrators and staff were regularly notified of construction activity. Whenever possible, advance notice was given to all necessary parties to minimise disturbance, respecting the needs of the necessary functions of the hospital.
Sharon Cary, Inpatient Services Manager for Central Network Mental Health Sutherland said that Donnelley Constructions interaction skill was “Always positive and useful. There was a good customer relationship and communication – at a minimum on a fortnightly basis. Importantly, there was also flexibility without compromise”.
“Overall, it was great quality work and it was always easy to contact the principal builder directly with any issues.” She said. “There was quick resolution to issues and a positive learning experience for someone who doesn’t work in the building industry”.
Donnelley Constructions is proud of its successful completion of the Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit, believing it to be an outstanding project achieved by working to specific guidelines, which were established as a part of the projects induction process.
