Westmead Hospital Mother Baby Unit

Project Profile

Health Infrastructure awarded this project to Donnelley Constructions in December 2021. The Scope of works included design finalisation and construction of a new 8-bed acute mental health facility. The aim of this facility is to increase support for NSW mothers who require care in a hospital for perinatal mental illness.

Works involved demolition and construction within the Redbank House Complex within the Westmead Hospital Campus, including building extension and external works.

Project Challenges

The prospect of working in a live hospital campus always poses a challenge to a project. Donnelley Constructions continually monitored and re-assessed the impacts of works upon the hospital grounds, staff and the surrounding community. Construction plans were adjusted accordingly to ensure the mitigation of any issues identified. All areas surrounding the works remained open during the entire project and were accommodated successfully.

Adjacent live environment included both Health Services and Special Needs Primary education. These services bounded the construction site on 3 sides, making materials handling and noise suppression of upmost importance.

The site team’s ability to communicate with all stakeholders in all situations saw them manage the challenges to ensure a smooth delivery was achieved.

Due to planning and budget constraints, existing slabs and structural walls were kept while  complete new roof structures and cladding plus the addition of 400m2 of new construction. This mix of construction has many un-known elements which required ‘on the run’ design compliances.
