Blacktown Hospital Refurbishment Package 2

Project Profile

Known for our ability to keep to tight timeframes and controlling multiple contracts simultaneously, Health Infrastructure has kept Donnelley Constructions employed at Blacktown Hospital since 2015.  These multi-stage contracts have included major civil works, relocations, and internal fitouts.

In June 2018 Donnelley Constructions began Blacktown Hospital Refurbishment Package 2. This site was located within “The Year 2000 Building” within the main hospital campus. Throughout the course of works, the surrounding buildings, including those connecting to and neighbouring the site areas remained in continuous operation.

The scope of works included the Demolition and refurbishment of existing areas for the Day Medical Unit and the Allied Health New Ways of Working area.  It also included the refurbishment and extension of the building façade for the new Gastroenterology Comprehensive Care Centre

Project Challenges

Being faced with the refurbishment of an existing building with existing issues is always a challenge. The site team had to give meticulous attention to the removal of non-compliant fire rated interiors and upgrade the mechanical fire dampers across five floors.

The prospect of working in a live hospital environment always poses a challenge to a project. Blacktown Hospital and all areas surrounding the works including theatres, ICU, maternity and birthing remained operational during the entire project. Ensuring that any disruptions did not expose the patients or staff to any hazards was a priority, as well as minimising noise and vibration activities where possible.

Our approach to shared access sites is always one of consideration and professionalism ensuring minimal disruption to the hospital. Early warning notice was given to the hospital team to ensure all disruptions were approved before works commenced.

The site team’s ability to communicate with all stakeholders in all situations saw them manage the challenges to ensure a smooth delivery was achieved.
