Health Infrastructure awarded Donnelley Constructions the $6 million contract to redevelop the Nepean Hospital Somerset Cottage Childcare Centre. This site is located in Kingswood on the Nepean Hospital campus, the works consisted of relocation of the existing Childcare Centre to a new built location within the campus.
Somerset Cottage Childcare Centre was increased to a 68 place facility providing care for children from birth to 6 years of age. The scope of works included 800sqm built structure, 7 parking spaces and a playground area of 545 sqm. Works included bulk excavation, slab on ground construction, lightweight steel frame and trusses, roofing, and external cladding. The internal fit-out was carried out with the highest quality finishes. The external landscaping works included a 200mm thick concrete fence that was 3m high, a mixture of gardens, softfall safety surface, grass, concrete and timber decking. Play equipment for the children included a cubby house, embankment slide, sandpit, mud kitchen, stepping trees, and bridge. The external area was covered by shade sails.
The prospect of working in a live hospital campus always poses a challenge to a project. Donnelley Constructions continually monitored and re-assessed the impacts of works upon the hospital grounds, staff and the surrounding community. Constructions plans were adjusted accordingly to ensure the mitigation of any issues identified. All areas surrounding the works remained open during the entire project and were accommodated successfully.
The site team’s ability to communicate with all stakeholders in all situations saw them manage the challenges to ensure a smooth delivery was achieved.
