Killarney Heights Public School

Project Profile

NSW School Infrastructure awarded Donnelley Constructions the contract to upgrade Killarney Heights Public School. This included the design and construction of 7 new permanent teaching spaces, civil, landscaping and engineering services along with the initial demolition of the 1970’s Bini shell concrete dome.

Project Challenges

The prospect of working in a live school environment always poses a challenge to a project. Killarney Heights Public School remained open during the works and had to be accommodated accordingly.

Ensuring that no works exposed students or staff to danger was a priority especially considering major demolition works were undertaken. Donnelley Constructions approach to shared access sites is always one of consideration and professionalism.

The site team’s ability to communicate with stakeholders in all situations saw them manage the challenges and this ensured a smooth delivery was achieved.

UTS Chiller Upgrade

Project Profile

After the successful completion of Stage 2 works at Cabramatta High School, NSW DPWS engaged Donnelley Constructions to begin Stage 3 works.  The scope of works included the construction of new 2 storey classroom building, refurbishment of three buildings for new purposes and remove existing demountable classrooms. All buildings required new access ways, ramps and stairs.

This project included the construction and upgrade of two large carparks, associated roadways and a new school entry involving gates and fences. Local Council requirements incorporated a large water retention facility to be built underneath the major carpark. Cabramatta High School contains significant trees and exiting gardens that had to be retained.

The construction process included site establishment, demolition, surveying, excavation, roofing and cladding, internal walls, ceilings, joinery, doors, internal fit-out and installation of services.

Project Challenges

As with Stage 2, the prospect of working in a live school environment always poses a challenge to a project. Cabramatta High School remained open during the Stage 3 works.  Donnelley Constructions priority was to ensure that no works exposed students or staff to hazards, as well as minimising noise disruption to school activities.

A major challenge of this project was controlling site access into the school during school hours. With Roads and carparks being excavated, strict traffic control procedures were put in place to ensure the safety of students, staff and construction workers. Donnelley Constructions approach to shared access sites is always one of consideration and professionalism.

The school is bordered by approximately 20 neighbouring houses who are within close proximity of the boundary fence. Additionally, the majority of these neighbours were non-English speaking, increasing the difficulty of communication. The site team’s ability to communicate with stakeholders in all situations saw them manage the challenges, and ensure a smooth delivery was achieved.
